Students in training Training Programs:

Braille Transcription: The Kansas Braille Transcription Institute offers a 12 month self-paced course in literary Braille transcription. This course follows the guidelines set out by the Library of Congress.

There are many advantages to receiving your Braille Transcription training through KBTI.

  • KBTI has become the largest single school in the United States for Braille Transcription following the Library of Congress guidelines.
  • In addition to Literary Braille, we offer training in the transcription of
    • Textbook Braille
    • Nemeth Code
    • Foreign-language Braille
    • Tactile Graphics
  • Our program offers training in all aspects of the Braille transcription process, from manual entry and scanning, to formatting, editing, embossing, binding, and shipping.
  • Our program offers training in adaptive computer technologies, including speech synthesizers and magnification software.
  • We provide hands on, one-on-one instruction, whether in our training facility or through distance learning.

KBTI transcribers have produced a myriad of documents, ranging from letters and restaurant menus, to textbooks and course material in multiple languages. We have produced documents in many foreign languages, including Spanish, French, and Russian.

BrailleWriter Repair: KBTI also offers an in-house training program in manual BrailleWriter service and repair. Classes are held Monday through Friday for five hours per day.
